Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes

Healthy slow cooker sweet potatoes can be made savory with butter and pecans or sweet with cinnamon and brown sugar. And, mashed sweet potatoes from the crockpot are so good!

Well, now I know the secret. The secret to the best tasting sweet potatoes ever. The slow cooker.

There's something about cooking the sweet potatoes for 6 hours that make them absolutely perfect.

Top three reasons I LOVE slow cooker sweet potatoes:

  • They are more flavorful
  • The texture is soooo creamy
  • This is a SUPER EASY way to prepare sweet potatoes

How to make Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes?

  1. With a fork, poke holes all over the potatoes.
  2. Wrap potatoes in aluminum foil.
  3. Place potatoes in your slow cooker set to LOW.
  4. Cook for 5-6 hours.
  5. Unwrap potatoes, cut down the center of the potato and reveal the perfectly cooked sweet potato. Perfect texture for easy mashing or eating as is, with the skin on.

Since October is next week, I'm starting to think about Thanksgiving.

Here are a few reasons why these slow cooker sweet potatoes are perfect for Thanksgiving:

  1. You do not need to peel these potatoes - huge time saver.
  2. You will not need to use precious oven space cooking your potatoes
  3. A slow cooker is great for a buffet line. Each guest can grab their personal potato wrapped in the foil.
  4. If you're making mashed sweet potatoes, you will spend minimal time mashing as these potatoes come out so tender after cooking for so long.

There are several delicious ways to serve these sweet potatoes in a savory manner:

  1. With bacon pieces on top of the baked potato with the skin on
  2. With bacon pieces mixed into mashed sweet potatoes
  3. With butter and garlic salt

As you might guess, there are also yummy ways to serve these potatoes up in a sweet manner:

  1. Add cut up apples on top of mashed potatoes
  2. Add a touch of brown sugar and butter
  3. Pour a teaspoon of maple syrup on a single serving of mashed sweet potatoes
  4. Mash the sweet potatoes, place in baking dish, add marshmallows on top, and bake in the oven for a sweet potato souffle.

What is the difference between a yam and a sweet potato?

In most grocery stores, yams and sweet potatoes are very similar. The copper/reddish skin potatoes are referred to as yams or sweet potato yams and have tougher skin than the lighter skin sweet potatoes. The interior of the yams is orange and the light skin sweet potatoes are light white/yellow.

I think of sweet potatoes at Thanksgiving as the orange variety, so we always grab the yams.
