Ingredients

Sweet Batter

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar

Sandwich

  • 8 slices swiss cheese
  • 8 slices turkey
  • 8 slices ham
  • 8 slices thick white bread (texas style)
  • vegetable oil (1 inch deep in skillet for frying)

Toppings

  • powdered sugar
  • raspberry or blackberry jam

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together.

  2. In a separate bowl, stir the milk and egg together thoroughly.

  3. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until there are no lumps left in the mixture.  The batter should be somewhat runny.  You do want it to be a little thick (thick enough to stick to the sandwich while frying).

  4. Assemble the sandwiches by layering a slice of swiss cheese, then 4 meat slices, then swiss cheese, and top with second slice of bread.  Cheese on each side of the meat will give you a wonderful melty cheese on the sandwich.  Place a toothpick in two corners of the sandwich to hold it together while frying.  (this made the frying so much easier with flipping over the sandwich)

  5. Dip the whole sandwich in the batter, making sure the front, back, and side surfaces are covered in delicious batter.

  6. Pour ½ inch to 1 inch of vegetable oil in your skillet and turn on to high heat.  Cook for about 45 seconds to 1 minute on each side of sandwich or until they are sufficiently browned to your liking.

  7. Remove the sandwich from the skillet and drain on paper towels.

  8. Remove the toothpicks and with a small sifter, sprinkle the tops of the sandwich with powdered sugar to add to that wonderful sweet/savory combo.

  9. Serve on a plate with a spoonful of raspberry or blackberry jam.  It really adds a nice extra punch.
