You know when you're at Cafe Orleans in New Orleans Square at Disneyland savoring a Monte Cristo sandwich and loving every moment?
Well, I was at Disney in July, and all I could think about as I was enjoying every last crumb of the incredible Cafe Orleans Monte Cristo, was "how can I make this at home?".
I believe this recipe is pretty darn close. It does not have quite as high of a batter layer as they do at Disney, but the taste is super similar.
Tips for this Disneyland Copycat Monte Cristo Sandwich recipe:
- You need to use a thicker bread than normal sandwich bread. We found a thick cut white bread at Trader Joe's and it worked perfectly. Regular white bread will work as well - you will want to monitor it more closely while frying as the bread will be soaked in batter quicker.
- The batter drenched bread cooks up pretty quick in your hot skillet. I slightly burned my first one because I did not flip it over quick enough. It was still yummy though. 🙂 It only took about 45 seconds - 1 minute on each side for browning perfection.
As I was cooking this delicious sandwich, I was wondering what the monte cristo sandwich origin is and how its evolved. Turns out the monte cristo sandwich is a variation of the French Croque Monsieur, which is a baked or fried boiled ham and cheese sandwich. They first made an appearance in Paris in 1910.
The Monte Cristo sandwich Disneyland is deliciously fried, sweet and savory and all good things. At home, I did not fry it quite as much as the folks at Disney and it was still stupendously delicious.
I decided to make this when my daughter was having a monte cristo sandwich craving (due to our recent Disney visit) and we looked high and low and could not find one near us anywhere. This really surprised us and motivated me to figure it out at home.
Turns out, it was pretty easy to throw together and is super delicious. Perfect balance between savory and sweet.
If I can make this, you can too! I promise.
Enjoy!!

Monte Cristo Sandwich (Disneyland Copycat Recipe)
This Disneyland Monte Cristo Sandwich copycat recipe is easy and would work well for delicious lunch or dinner meals.
Ingredients
Sweet Batter
- 1 cup flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup milk
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- 2 tbsp sugar
Sandwich
- 8 slices swiss cheese
- 8 slices turkey
- 8 slices ham
- 8 slices thick white bread (texas style)
- vegetable oil (1 inch deep in skillet for frying)
Toppings
- powdered sugar
- raspberry or blackberry jam
Instructions
-
Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt together.
-
In a separate bowl, stir the milk and egg together thoroughly.
-
Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until there are no lumps left in the mixture. The batter should be somewhat runny. You do want it to be a little thick (thick enough to stick to the sandwich while frying).
-
Assemble the sandwiches by layering a slice of swiss cheese, then 4 meat slices, then swiss cheese, and top with second slice of bread. Cheese on each side of the meat will give you a wonderful melty cheese on the sandwich. Place a toothpick in two corners of the sandwich to hold it together while frying. (this made the frying so much easier with flipping over the sandwich)
-
Dip the whole sandwich in the batter, making sure the front, back, and side surfaces are covered in delicious batter.
-
Pour ½ inch to 1 inch of vegetable oil in your skillet and turn on to high heat. Cook for about 45 seconds to 1 minute on each side of sandwich or until they are sufficiently browned to your liking.
-
Remove the sandwich from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
-
Remove the toothpicks and with a small sifter, sprinkle the tops of the sandwich with powdered sugar to add to that wonderful sweet/savory combo.
-
Serve on a plate with a spoonful of raspberry or blackberry jam. It really adds a nice extra punch.
