I've been to the Amish market in Annapolis, Maryland a handful of times, and, man, are their baked goods amazing. I can't believe its taken me this long to make their sugar cookies.

They are brilliant in their simplicity, because, somehow, the simple ingredients in this cookie combine to create a wonderful, uniquely textured sugar cookie.

Ingredients for Amish Sugar Cookies:

  1. Unsalted Butter
  2. Vegetable Oil
  3. Granulated Sugar
  4. Powdered Sugar
  5. 2 Eggs
  6. Vanilla Extract
  7. All-purpose Flour
  8. Baking Soda
  9. Cream of Tartar

How to Make Amish Cookies?

Several very simple steps to fabulous cookies. And, it is all done in ONE bowl. Yay!

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a stand mixer, mix the softened butter, oil, and sugars, until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in eggs and vanilla.
  4. Mix in flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar.
  5. Scoop out dough in 2 tbsp size chunks, roll in your hands, then roll dough ball in granulated sugar.
  6. Place dough balls on parchment paper-covered baking tray.
  7. Cook for 8 minutes in the preheated oven.
  8. After removing from the oven, immediately slide parchment paper with cookies on it to a wire rack to cool.

Possible Amish Cookie Variations:

  1. Add a cup of chocolate chips to create Chocolate Chip Amish Cookies.
  2. Add red and green sprinkles for Christmas.
  3. Add black and orange sprinkles for Halloween.
  4. Add yellow, orange and brown sprinkles for Thanksgiving.
  5. And, you guessed it, red sprinkles for Valentine's Day.
